Summary
When a peptide certificate of analysis leaves a field blank, unreadable, or printed as “Unknown,” research inventory practice is document-or-delete: copy what is printed; omit what is not. Do not fill gaps from another lot, another strength, a lab’s reputation, or a catalog name. Blank method, purity, identity, lab, or lot cells stay blank until a matching-strength report prints them.
What “document-or-delete” means here
For each inventory row tied to a vial lot:
- Document — copy Product, Lot, Test date, Lab, Method, Purity %, Identity (and similar) only when those strings appear on the matching COA.
- Delete / omit — leave the cell empty in hub tables, notes, and product copy when the field is missing, illegible, or not applicable on that report.
This is the same discipline as reading a COA field-by-field (How to Read a Peptide Certificate of Analysis) and matching the vial lot before filing anything (Matching Lot Numbers: From Vial Label to the COA Library).
Common blank-field patterns (literacy only)
| Situation | Inventory action |
|---|---|
| Lot usable on vial + COA | Match, then file printed fields only |
| Lot blank / “Unknown” on COA | Do not invent a lot ID; keep vial label for your records; omit complete-row claims |
| Method unnamed | Do not add HPLC, UHPLC, MS, or “screening” upgrades |
| Purity % missing (quantity-only) | Not a purity claim — see HPLC Purity vs. Net Peptide Content |
| Identity blank | Do not infer identity from purity % |
| Lab blank | Do not claim “third-party tested” (needs named lab on COA) |
| Strength on COA ≠ live SKU strength | Do not fill the live SKU row from the mismatched report |
Why borrowing from other lots fails
A purity percentage, method string, or lab name on lot A does not document lot B, even when the catalog name matches. Strength mismatches (COA for a different mg than the vial on the bench) likewise do not fill the live SKU row. Each filed claim needs the matching lot’s printed text.
How to log incomplete certificates
- Match vial lot to the library (or note “no library row”).
- Confirm product name and strength.
- List fields that are printed.
- Explicitly leave blanks for fields that are not.
- Do not backfill from VERIFY rows that are PARTIAL / MISSING for that lot — VERIFY gaps stay gaps until a report supplies them.
- If the lot is absent from the public library, request the certificate through store support with order number + vial lot — still do not invent fields while waiting.
