Summary
PubChem compound records supply reference identity fields — CID, CAS (when listed), molecular weight, formula, and sequence — for many research peptides. Those fields describe the chemical entity in the database; they are not lot numbers and do not replace a certificate of analysis. This article shows how to read common PubChem fields using only SAFE cites already verified for Momentum Labs documentation: BPC-157 and the TB-500 fragment record. Compounds still marked VERIFY-open are omitted rather than filled from guesswork.
What a PubChem compound page is for
PubChem is a public compound database maintained by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. A compound page can list identifiers and computed or deposited properties useful for laboratory identity notes. It does not document your vial’s purity, test date, or third-party lab result — those come from the lot COA after a vial–library match (see How to Read a Peptide Certificate of Analysis).
Fields researchers usually copy
| Field | Typical use in lab notes |
|---|---|
| CID | Stable PubChem compound identifier |
| CAS | Registry number when present on the record |
| Molecular weight | Reference mass for the listed form |
| Molecular formula | Elemental composition string |
| Sequence / synonyms | Peptide residue string when deposited |
Copy values from the PubChem page you opened, not from marketing blurbs. If a field is absent on that record, leave it blank.
CAS vs lot number
CAS identifies a chemical substance in registry systems. Lot identifies a manufactured / tested unit set on a vial and COA. Never use a CAS string as a lot ID in receiving logs. Never use a lot ID as a CAS.
SAFE example — BPC-157
Verified SAFE fields (PubChem compound 9941957):
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| CID | 9941957 |
| CAS | 137525-51-0 |
| Molecular weight | 1419.5 |
| Formula | C62H98N16O22 |
| Sequence | Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val |
Use this record for BPC-157 identity reference notes. Still match your vial lot in the COA library before filing purity or method.
SAFE example — TB-500 fragment (not full TB4)
Momentum Labs documentation for TB-500 / Thymosin Beta-4 fragment identity uses PubChem compound 62707662 — not full thymosin beta-4 CID 45382195 (different record).
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| CID | 62707662 |
| Sequence | Ac-Leu-Lys-Lys-Thr-Glu-Thr-Gln-OH |
| CAS | 885340-08-9 |
| Molecular weight | 889.0 |
| Formula | C38H68N10O14 |
Do not substitute the full TB4 compound page when filing fragment identity for this catalog item.
VERIFY-open compounds — omit rather than invent
Other catalog compounds may still have PubChem / CAS items marked VERIFY-open in internal handoffs. This article does not invent CAS, sequence, CID, or molecular weight for those compounds. Prefer omission until VERIFY clears SAFE fields. Identity on the COA (when printed) and lot match remain the storefront documentation path — see also Mass Spec Identity vs Chromatographic Purity.
Peer-reviewed reporting vs database identity
PubChem supports chemical identity literacy. Peer-reviewed papers answer different questions about study design and reporting (see What Peer-Reviewed Peptide Research Reporting Usually Includes (and Omits)). Keep database identity and literature claims in separate notebook sections.
