Summary

A peptide certificate of analysis may print an appearance, physical description, or similar line for the lot on file (for example, a short phrase describing the sealed dry solid as observed for that report). Inventory practice: after matching lot + name + strength, copy the printed line into notes when it is present; omit the field when it is blank. An appearance line is lot documentation — it is not a substitute for identity testing, chromatographic purity, or sealed-storage literacy on Academy 15. This article covers reading printed appearance fields only — not reconstitution, solvents, volumes, or use protocols.

What an appearance line is (and is not)

Printed fieldInventory useWhat it is not
Appearance / physical description (when printed)Copy into lot notes for the matching certificateNot inventable if blank; not identity; not purity %
Related storage / conditions notes (when printed)Cross-read with Academy 15; still copy-onlyNot permission to invent temps or handling claims
Blank appearance cellOmit (document-or-delete)Not a gap to fill from another lot or a catalog photo

Field-by-field reading still follows Academy 04 (How to Read a Peptide Certificate of Analysis). Blank cells stay blank (When a COA Field Is Blank: Document-or-Delete for Research Inventory).

Why appearance ≠ identity or purity

Identity and purity claims on research documentation come from printed analytical fields on the matching lot report (for example, named methods and printed results) — not from a short appearance phrase. A description of form or color on the certificate does not:

If appearance is printed and analytical fields are blank, document appearance only; leave analytical cells empty.

Copy / omit rules

  1. Match first — vial lot + product name + strength to the report (see Academy 14 / 09 literacy in the cluster).
  2. If appearance is printed — copy the string exactly into inventory notes for that lot.
  3. If appearance is blank, illegible, or “Unknown” — omit; do not invent color, form, or “typical lyophilized” language from another lot or a marketing page.
  4. Do not upgrade — do not expand a short printed phrase into a longer description you did not see on the report.
  5. Sealed dry solid only — this literacy is for documenting what the certificate prints about the sealed material on file; it is not a reconstitution or solvent protocol (Academy 15).

Common patterns (literacy)

SituationInventory action
Appearance printed; lot + name + strength matchCopy the printed appearance string
Appearance blankOmit; do not invent
Appearance printed on a mismatched-strength COADo not file against the vial lot
Catalog photo / PDP image vs COA appearanceImages are not COA fields — do not copy image captions into COA cells
Storage line present, appearance blankCopy storage only if printed; still omit appearance

How this ties to storage notes

Academy 15 covers storage / conditions lines versus sealed lyophilized vial literacy. Appearance often sits near those lines on a report. Treat them as separate fields: copy each only when printed; invent neither. Neither field replaces identity or purity.
